WHAT IS FEEDBACK?

Bookshelves filled with books in a library aisle with a black carpet and a wooden floor, with circular ceiling lights visible in the background.

Feedback allows writers to grow and revise, transforming the story from the writer’s internal bubble, to a piece to be consumed by the external world.

Breaks the ‘writer’s bubble’

Stories and poems spend the beginning of their creative cycle purely in the writer’s mind. This can create a plethora of background information that the writer assumes is clear, but is often not communicated or is skipped over in the submitted work.

Catches Blind Spots

pacing issues

character design

plot holes

dialect problems

spelling and grammar mistakes

formatting problems

world building

etc.

Tests audience engagement

Think of writing as a dialogue between writer and reader. The submission is the basis of conversation and feedback is the reader's response. The response relays how much the reader understands the dialogue at hand. This allows writer’s to see through another set of eyes what is working and what isn’t.

Feedback allows the writer to see how readers consume their work, what is picked up on and what is left behind, and revise.

How do we give feedback that benefits the writing process?

If you’re having trouble curating feedback- follow Workshop’d’s 3-step design:

first read

After receiving your Workshop’d partners work, you will make a copy and read it straight through, using blue text you will make notes. These notes are not extensive but immediate reactions and thoughts.

second read

After your first read you will go back and re-read the story. You will use green text/highlight to mark what is working and what is not, what is clear and understood, and where the story lacks that explanation. You will make extensive notes on the story itself.

workshop’d letter

After you complete all margin notes you will write a short letter of three paragraphs- what you liked and what worked, and what you didn’t like/ didn’t work. Your final paragraph is set for questions, suggestions, and any other notes you have for the writer and their piece.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

A row of old, worn books standing upright on a dark surface, with colorful blurred objects in the background.

The most helpful part of Workshop’d’s design is feedback!

feedback is communication- constructive criticism is necessary for growth.
